| Abortion is a legal medical procedure and, as such, should be available to all. As one who works in the field of domestic violence and sexual abuse, I'd like to expand on my responses to questions e and f. In cases of incest, the minor's parent could be the perpetrator and therefore it would be difficult for the minor to obtain permission. Family planning information is difficult to get in Utah, especially in rural areas. The state should participate in the pass through of funds for Planned Parenthood. Utah has extremely restrictive abortion laws; this need to change. | |||

| Using the above proposals to balance the budget negatively impacts Utah's citizens. I urge exploring instituting taxes on extractive industries as surrounding states have done and paying more attention to not wasting money on message bills; less allocation of money for projects outside the state, such as the appropriation for the Oakland CA port; and fewer funds to fight the federal government. | |||
| b)If Utah is to have a world class education system; it must compensate & support its teachers to a much great degree than currently. c & d) These are overlapping concerns: air quality is a health care issue for many, until it is treated as such, little will be accomplished. Without governmental regulations, many on the Wasatch front would find it difficult to breathe due to air contamination. Utah has given away billions of dollars by refusing to expand Medicaid. This is money Utah taxpayers sent to Washington, but we're not getting its benefits. Expand Medicaid. | |||
| The state should get out of the alcohol sales business! If it's privatized, the taxes should be increased slightly to increase revenue. Utah is considered "the best state for business" because of low corporate taxes and low wages. For Utah's citizens to prosper, this must change. 62% of states have a higher minimum wage than the current Federal minimum wage of $7.25/hr.(Utah too!) The current wage for tipped waitstaff is $2.13/hr! Please remember that next time you eat out. Increasing sales taxes disproportionately affect lower income families who can afford it the least. | There's a major difference in how candidates raise money. Most R's receive money from businesses and PAC's, Dems raise it from individuals. In my last campaign I raised over $21,000 and it was all from individuals. My opponent raised about the same amount, but only 2 individuals contributed. The rest was from businesses or PAC. Who will be represented? Independent or bipartisan commission for redistricting is the only option that will ever bring a semblance of balance to state governing. Whichever party is in power stays there with the current system. Public hearings were a joke for the last redistricting. | |||

Owning guns is a lawful act for most, but not all, Utah citizens. c) Currently one only has to take a 4 hour course and pass a background check to carry a concealed weapon, you don't even have to demonstrate that you know how to fire the gun. This should be required! I support Rep. Brian King's bill to put teeth into the current laws addressing domestic violence offenders. | |||

| I am running to replace Sen. Steve Urquhart who was instrumental in getting the first non-discrimination law passed in Utah. I will continue to work toward broadening Utah's anti-discrimination laws. The high rates of suicide in Utah may be attributed to LGBTQ bullying and lack of counseling resources; both which might be improved as a result of expanded legislation. | |||
| Improving public education for all Utah students is a priority; they deserve to be taught by the well-qualified, well-respected teachers. Additional educational funding can come through taxes on extractive industries (coal) and increased corporate taxes. Profit margins for many businesses sky-rocketed as the economy improved: some of this should be returned to the state to increase educational spending. Improving wages and bringing about pay equity are essential. Can you live on $14,500? (full time/minimum wage annual income) If Utah increases the minimum wage, more money will flow back into the economy, benefitting all and adding funds to the tax base. |
